SilkeMat® is a non-carcinogenic refractory fiber blanket that can be cut, molded, rigidized, and formed, with or without rigidizing. For rigidized SilkeMat used above 1400°F, a high-grade boron nitride separator is recommended for cleaner glass release. Free of “shot” (tiny silica particles), it produces clean firings, leaving only the fiber texture on the glass. A respirator is unnecessary unless sanding. SilkeMat offers limitless possibilities for creating forms and molds, expanding artistic potential. SilkeMat® Lite, made from the same fiber, is thinner at approximately 3 mm, softer, and more loosely constructed, requiring gentle handling. When rigidizing with SilkeMat Rigidizer, lightly coat one side initially to preserve flexibility, adding more as needed. Its thin profile is ideal for detailed work such as casting, bas relief, pâte de verre, and crackle effects. For non-porous models, apply a separator like inexpensive vegetable spray; for porous ones, encase in polycarbonate or wrap in clear kitchen film. Drying and firing follow standard SilkeMat procedures, though Lite dries faster. Lightly spraying rigidized molds with high-quality boron nitride further aids release.
